The project, located in the department of Vichada, Eastern Colombia, focuses on an afforestation scheme to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions while driving positive socio-economic changes in the region. By implementing employment and technology transfer programs, the project supports local community development alongside environmental restoration efforts.
The project is situated within and around the Bita River Basin, on a total area of 106,522.07 hectares, targeting degraded grasslands in the municipalities of Puerto Carreño, La Primavera, and Cumaribo. Currently managed by Al- dea Forestal and InverBosques, the project has successfully established significant forest plantations. This vast region is divided into various plots, with 21,423.92 hectares designated as the eligible planting area. Between 2006 and 2024, project participants have afforested 21,415.21 hectares.
Aldea Forestal manages 3,282.26 hectares, while InverBosques oversees 18,132.95 hectares. Initially validated and verified in 2016 under Gold Standard Version 0.9, the project transitioned to Gold Standard for the Global Goals (GS4GG) in 2019 and was successfully revalidated in 2023. Currently, the project is undergoing fourth performance review. As part of its evolution, the project has shifted its focus from a rotation-based model to long-term conservation, ensuring sustained environmental and socio-economic benefits. The projects’ estimated total emission reduction over its lifetime is 6,477,761 tCO2e.
